Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that included no new data.
