TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the amount of AI-made media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features more than 1 billion AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a global launch. This development comes amid a rise in AI-generated material, fueled by new AI video creators.
The Broader AI Trend
It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently absurd or surreal.
Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we want to give people the power to see more or less of that, based on their own preferences,” said a company executive.
Volume and Proportions
The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as made with AI. Collectively, more than 100 million media items are submitted to the app every day, making clips made by AI a relatively small portion of its total content library.
User Control Features
Users will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they view by using the topic control feature in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the filter cover news, clothing, beauty, and dance.
Platform Guidelines
The platform’s guidelines require creators to identify convincing AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of public figures or emergencies. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.
Furthermore, the platform will henceforth attach an “AI-made” label to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This step is intended to stop users from trying to evade the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is furthermore introducing a $2m awareness program for specialists and groups to produce learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will assist charitable organizations specializing in training coding and technology.
Content Safety Approach
The platform has supported its content review process, during discussion over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in Britain. The company is planning to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection team in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A company official explained that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most distressing content before it is viewed by people. The platform stated a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.
“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
